Born in New Zealand of Maori and Croatian descent. A former NZ boxing champion, his 342 amateur fights over a 12-year career saw him win numerous NZ boxing titles, including a gold medal at the Oceania Games in Dubbo, NSW, Australia and a bronze medal at the World Cup Boxing Championships in New York in 1979. Along with his brother, George, a Commonwealth Games Heavyweight medal winner, the Stankovich brothers are well known for their National and International boxing achievements.
In 1979 Andy was the youngest person in NZ to attain a construction explosive blasting license. For over 30 years Andy worked with his father George and brother George Jr, in their family rock blasting business and for the Western Australian gold mines as an explosive shot firer. Andy currently owns and operates Waitakere Scrap Metals in West Auckland, NZ.
Andy acknowledges the love of his partner, Glenys, who supports him in every aspect of his career.
